The Remarkable Mary Somerville, Queen of 19th Century Science

On 19 February 2021 we were treated to a Zoom tour-de-force by Ian Archibald on the life and times of this extraordinary woman.

Largely self-taught at a time when education for women was not encouraged, she was an astronomer, a pioneering mathematician and a gifted writer. She has been described as the most remarkable woman of her generation. Nearly 150 years after her death her talents and achievements were at long last recognised when her head was featured on the Royal Bank of Scotland’s new £10 note.

“Thank you so much for such a superb evening’s entertainment.  Wonderfully researched and executed.  Enjoyed every minute.”
