Visiting other churches and getting inspiration

Our first step, and it proved to be inspired, was to visit other churches which had refurbished recently, to see what they had done and to gather ideas.  We visited five churches in all, including three in one hectic but immensely valuable day, when we packed a good proportion of our congregation into a bus and went church sight-seeing!

We are happy to thank the churches we visited for their hospitality, the time and effort they put into our visit, and for the ideas we gathered from them.

Kelso North Church, 42 Bowmont Street, Kelso

St Andrew Blackadder Parish Church, North Berwick

St Phillips Church, Abercorn Terrace, Joppa, Edinburgh

The visits gave us confidence; other people had done this, so – so could we.  And they gave us courage to be bold and to “go the whole hog”.  And everyone gave us the same three pieces of advice, that we followed and that served us well.

1. Take professional advice

2. Set a firm budget and make it clear to everyone

3. Keep the project on budget and on time, all the time
